With 75 Million visitors per year, France is the most visited country in the world. A total of 15,500 taxis serve Paris and 3 suburbs departments and, compared to other European countries and USA, Parisian rates are among the cheapest.
There are several ways to get a cab: Taxi station, radio cab company, internet service, or hail one in the street.

If you want to know whether a taxi is available or not when trying to hail on in the street, you simply have a look at the taxi sign on top of the car. If the taxi sign is lit up, it means that the taxi is available. If the taxi sign is not lit up, and one of the 3 small coloured lights underneath is lit up, this means that the taxi is already taken. The small couloured lights are the rates indicators. Taxi users shouldn't care about them, but the police surely do. Rate applied on the meter is shown up, on the top of the car.
In Paris there are three different rate codes, A, B and C, with A being the less expensive rate code and C the most expensive one.
